Coach Juan is currently an assistant/goalkeeper coach for the Cougars of Azusa Pacific University. He will be entering his 6 year at APU. In his first season (2013) as the goalkeeper coach, he helped the goalkeeper corps earn eight clean sheets (almost triple the amount from the previous season) and lower the goal against average (GAA) from 1.68 (the previous season) to 1.00 GAA helping the Cougars for a tie for first place in the PacWest. In his second season as the GK coach, the goalkeepers were able to amass six clean sheets and lower the GAA to 0.94, which helped them to a PacWest Championship and a second round NCAA playoff game. In his last four years at APU, he has helped the GK corps to 22 clean sheets and a 1.26 GAA. During his time at Azusa Pacific, Juan had been the head coach at Newport Harbor High School (2010-2015). There he turned around a program that had won four games prior to his arrival, taking them twice to the CIF playoffs. During his tenure there, he had two Sunset League offensive players of the year recipients and two Daily Pilot (local newspaper) soccer players of the year. Prior to Newport Harbor High school, Juan worked with the Southern California Seahorses as the mens assistant soccer coach for the PDL team for three season, their head mens amateur coach for three seasons and director of camps for their Seahorse Soccer Camp. Coach Juan has also worked on the womens side. He had been the head coach at Rio Hondo College where in his second year took the team from last to first and was selected Foothill Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to Rio Hondo, he was the head coach at Missouri Baptist University where he help lead the program to the playoffs two years in a row. Prior to MBU, he was the womens head coach at El Dorado High School (Placentia, CA) for three years. There he led the team to three CIF appearances, reaching the semifinals twice and quarterfinals once. Prior to EDHS, he was the head coach at Santa Ana College, where he was the first coach in the womens soccer program to have a winning season and in his third year was selected Orange Empire Conference Coach of the Year. Coach Mares is the holder of the five highest coaching licenses in the United States: the USSF National A, USSF National Goalkeeping, USSF National Youth, NSCAA Premier License, and NSCAA National Goalkeeping. He is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength Conditioning Association (NSCA). Juan graduated from Azusa Pacific University in 1990 with a degree in Physical Education. He continued his education at California State University Fullerton, where he received his Masters in Science in Kinesiology, double majoring in Biomechanics and Sport Psychology. Juan has been married to his lovely wife Marjorie for 11 years and have an eight year-old budding soccer star, Ricardo, whom he coaches at Beach FC. They currently reside in Bellflower and attend Cotton Wood Church. In his free time, he like to cycle, kayak, and spend time with his family at the beach.
