Melissa Anderson became just the second head coach for the East Central University volleyball team in April 2016.
In her two seasons with the Tigers, Anderson has pushed the team to achieve on and off the court. She has seen seven players named to the Great America Conference All-Academic teams and nine to the D2ADA Academic teams, while also having one of the highest team GPAs among the ECU teams.
On the court her student-athletes have made strong improvements, recording 28 Tiger career top-10 records, three top-3 single season records and helped the team set two now top-2 single season records. The team has also combined to be strong overall, as the 2017 edition led the GAC is digs (19.68/set).
Anderson returned to the Tiger Athletic Department after spending the last eight years as the head volleyball coach at Otero Junior College. Before she went to Colorado, Anderson earned a bachelors degree in business administration and a masters degree in sports administration from East Central, while working in the athletic department.
Five of her eight season at Otero ended with 19 or more win seasons. Anderson managed all aspects of the volleyball program and assisted with sports information duties. Under her tutelage, Otero has produced 18 All-Region IX selections in the NJCAA, with no less than two honorees in each of her eight seasons.
Her teams were not only successful on the court, but in the classroom as well. In eight seasons her team has maintained an average team GPA of 3.14 and has seen 42 Region IX All-Academic Team and nine Academic All-America selections.
Her student-athletes have continued their success after leaving Otero, with nine players moving on to NCAA Division II, one to NCAA DI, one to NCAA DIII and six to NAIA schools to complete their playing careers.
The Thoreau, N.M., native played collegiate volleyball at Lamar Community College for two years and two years at Si Tanka University in Huron, S.D., where she helped the team advance to the 2003 NAIA National Volleyball Tournament.
