Spangler led the Lady Comets to a 16-4 record and a runner-up finish in District 2 during the fall season. In the spring campaign, he led the boys to a 12-3 finish and second place in the Lackawanna League. Prior to taking the coaching position at Abington Heights, Spangler spent four years (2009-12) as the head coach of the Pittsburgh womens volleyball club, a student-run organization at the University of Pittsburgh that competed in approximately three to five events each semester, including the National Collegiate Club Volleyball Championships in the spring. While at Pittsburgh, Spangler served as the president of the University of Pittsburgh mens club volleyball from 2007 to 2009. The club team is a member of the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation, which promotes organized collegiate club volleyball for men and women. The team at Pitt annually competed in tournaments both at Pitt and at other universities across the country in both the fall and spring semesters. Spangler is the 12th head coach in the Royal women's volleyball program's 39-year history. In his first three seasons at the helm, Spangler has led the Royals to berths in the Landmark Conference Tournament in each season. In 2013, Scranton defeated Moravian College, 3-1, in the quarterfinals before dropping a 3-1 decision to seven-time champion and NCAA powerhouse Juniata College in the next round.
