A coaching veteran with more than 10 years of experience at the NAIA level, as well as stops at NCAA Division II and NJCAA institutions, Voorhees College announced Derrick Mitchell as its new head mens basketball coach in July of 2014. Mitchell took over the helm of the Tigers after spending the past season as the Assistant Coach at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Ark. He became just the ninth mens basketball coach in Voorhees College history. The 2017-18 season at Voorhees College was one to remember for sure. Voorhees finished the season as a NAIA Division II National Championship participant while having a record of 19-10.  Voorhees traveled to Sioux Falls, SD as a participant in the NAIA national tournament.  Unfortunately, the Tigers would lose in the first round to Indiana East 91-79. Despite being picked to finish fifth in the conference in the preseason poll, Voorhees finished runner-up in the conference and conference tournament.  During the 2017-18 campaign, Mitchell and the Tigers were one of two Division II NAIA teams to beat A.I.I Conference champions Stillman College. 2016-17 was one for the record books as Mitchell, and the Tigers, 17-13 on the year, claimed the A.I.I. Conference Tournament Championship.  After falling short the previous year, the Tigers had one goal in mind all year and they were able to accomplish that feat.  In Mitchells first season at the helm, 2014-15 he led Voorhees to a 14-17 record. Last Year, in 2015-2016 Mitchell led Voorhees College Men to new heights.  The Tigers amassed an overall record of     21-8.  That was good for +7 win increase for the Tigers.  This was the largest win increase from year to year in almost 15 years.  To top this off, Voorhees went a whopping 10-4 on the road during Mitchells second season for the 5th best road record in the NAIA. To top off an amazing year for the second year coach, Coach Mitchell was named A.I.I 2015-16 Mens Basketball Coach of the Year.  This was quite an accomplishment for Mitchell.  He responded by saying Im humbled and blessed by the accolades, but as a team we fell short of our goal, which was to win a National Championship! In two years Mitchell is 35-25 (59% win pct.) Prior to coming to Voorhees, Mitchell served as assistant coach of the womens basketball team at Division II Southern Arkansas University. While at Southern Arkansas University (SAU), he assisted the team in reaching the conference tournament for the first time since 2006-2007 season. Just a year removed from a 0-25 season, with Mitchells assistance, the team won more games (12) than the previous three seasons combined.  Before his appointment at SAU, Mitchell was a middle school coach at R.B. Hudson High School in Selma, Ala. While there, Mitchell had a record of 25-2 in two seasons as well as winning two championships. Mitchell also previously served as assistant coach at Wallace Community College in Selma, Ala.  In that role, he served as recruiting coordinator and worked specifically with the team guards.  While at WCCS, under the tutelage of Head coach Antoinette Blevins, Mitchell was able to help them capture two back to back conference championships, as well as send (5) five young ladies to division I colleges. Mitchell earned a bachelors degree in economics from Tougaloo College in 2002. He later received a masters degree in coaching and sports studies from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala. in 2009. He is married to QuShawanda Fields-Mitchell of Flint, Mich.  They have two children Bryson 9, and Brookelynn 2.
