Lakeland College has named Alex Mattson as its new head women’s soccer coach, and the 2016 season will be the first with the program for the Wisconsin native.
Mattson came to Lakeland after serving four years as a collegiate assistant coach, including the last two years at Alma College in Michigan. He replaces Kim Kriese, who served as the Muskies’ head coach the last two years.
Mattson is a native of Brookfield, Wis., and will return to his home state for his first collegiate head coaching job. Most recently he coached at Alma, an NCAA Division III school where he was involved in all areas of the program. He also served as the primary goalkeepers’ coach on teams that made the schools’ first two appearances ever in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament.
While working towards his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Mattson also was an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Ripon College for two years. With the women’s team, he worked under Sam Schroeder, a former Lakeland student-athlete and assistant coach.
Mattson received his bachelor’s degree from UW-Oshkosh in education with an emphasis on natural science in June 2014. He also is working towards his master’s degree from Ohio University in recreation and sport pedagogy with an emphasis in coaching of soccer.er Club since January of 2010.
