Bonewitz began his tenure at Alvernia in 2006 as the assistant coach, before being named the head coach for the 2007 season. This was his 24th year of coaching after spending 10 years at Ursinus College, from August 1992 through January of 2003. He was the men’s assistant coach and recruiter for the first two years and spent the final eight instituting and heading up the women’s program.
Prior to that, he spent 12 years coaching select and premier levels of youth teams in both Eastern Pa.Youth Soccer for 11 years and one season in Eastern New York Youth programs. During this time Bonewitz founded and directed the Suburban Storm Soccer team under the specific purpose of exposing talented high school seniors from the four surrounding counties (Montgomery, Berks, Chester and Bucks) to college coaches.
