Coming off one of the most successful campaigns in Davidson men’s soccer history, the 2014 fall slate marked the 14th under head coach Matt Spear ‘93. Spear brings a diversity and depth of soccer knowledge to the Wildcat program. He has been involved in the game at nearly every level since his graduation from Davidson in 1993, including five years as a part-time assistant coach for Davidson under head coach Charlie Slagle. “Matt’s leadership, coupled with his intensity and focus, has proven to be the catalyst for a group of young men with a will to succeed,’’ commented Davidson Director of Athletics Jim Murphy. “Matt’s understanding of the Davidson culture has served him well as he continues our soccer program’s tradition of excellence on the soccer pitch and in the classroom.” On the field and a long the sidelines, Spear has been a part of the program’s biggest wins. While a member of the team as a student-athlete, the Wildcats defeated powers UCLA, Wake Forest, Duke, NC State and North Carolina, ultimately reaching the College Cup in 1992. Spear, a midfielder, was a senior captain.
