Scott Bowers is in his third season as an assistant coach for the West Virginia University men’s soccer program.
Bowers works specifically with the WVU goalkeepers. In 2014, Lee Johnston earned All-Mid-American Conference Second Team honors, while posting six shutouts.
WVU posted four shutouts in 2015 as the Mountaineers went 7-12 and earned a berth in the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. In 2014, Bowers’ first season, he helped West Virginia to an 11-7-1 record, including going unbeaten in seven of its last nine games.
Prior to coming to WVU, Bowers spent the previous seven seasons as the Director of Goalkeeping for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He has served as the head coach of the U19 Boys IMG Academy team and an assistant coach of the United States Developmental Academy Boys U18/U16 teams.
He also has been an assistant coach at the United Soccer League Professional Combine (2012-14), an assistant coach of the IMG Academy Team in the United Soccer League Premier Development League (2006-14) and is a member of the national goalkeeping staff for the United States Soccer Federation Coaching Education (2011-14).
Other experience includes serving as the goalkeeper coach at Eckerd College from 2005-13, assisting the India Boy’s U15 National Team from 2010-12 and serving as the goalkeeper coach for the United States U17 Men’s National Team on an international trip to Ukraine from 2006-07.
Bowers was previously at West Virginia from 2002-04 as an assistant coach and helped mentor All-American Nick Noble. The Mountaineers posted a 12-7-1 record in 2004, after going just 9-21-5 in the previous two seasons.
His coaching career began at the University of Tampa, where he was an assistant coach on both the men’s and women’s programs in 2001, helping the men’s team to a NCAA Division II National Championship.
Bowers spent three years in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1991, earning a Letter of Commendation, a National Defense Medal and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.
He graduated from Salisbury University with a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies with a concentration in physical education in 2000, while earning his master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in athletic coaching education in 2005.
Bowers holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” License, a United States Soccer Federation National Goalkeeping License and NSCAA Level I, II Goalkeeping License.
Bowers and his wife Erica, have two children Tristan (7) and Kaya (5).
