Tennessee Tech head baseball coach Justin Holmes found the perfect fit for the team's opening at volunteer assistant coach, hiring Garrett Walters in the role for the 2018-19 season.
"Garrett comes to us with a lot of experience at the Division I level," Holmes explained. "He brings a lot of energy and expertise in areas that we need that expertise in. I am really excited about that. He is valuable and a really hard worker. I really enjoy being around him and having him in our program. We're just happy to have him."
"Knowing [assistant coach] Mitch [Wright] prior to this, really helped me in getting my foot in the door and just seeing what Coach Holmes is about," Walters said of applying for the position. "Like I told Coach Holmes, I watched his press conference when he got the job. His enthusiasm and passion for not only baseball, but also just this program really drove me to want to be here, and I made that known. I spoke with him about it and it's just a good fit. Walking in here, everything is blue collar and these guys just get after it. They want to be here. They want to work for the guys next to them and I wanted to be a part of that."
Walters joins the Golden Eagle staff after serving as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Alabama during the 2017 and 2018 seasons under two different coaching staffs, including, most recently, head coach Brad Bohannon. He also worked as a coach for the East Coast Sox, a 15u travel team competing in WWBA tournaments.
While at Alabama, he handled equipment needs and oversaw the student manager program. He also assisted with batting practice, infield work and any extra skill work as needed. Additionally, he had a hand in running prospect camps, showcases and travel tournaments that were held at the Alabama facilities.
A former collegiate backstop at both the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Calhoun Community College, Walters will primarily work with the Golden Eagle catchers while also aiding with all field maintenance and day-to-day operations.
"We are going to put him to good use, having him do a lot of work with our catchers and work closely with our pitchers," Holmes explained of Walters' duties. "It makes sense that their catching coach and the guy that runs with those guys would not be separate but a part of the pitching staff, during the game. Obviously, by knowing and understanding what is going on, the catcher can have a great impact."
"I've been blessed with opportunities like playing at Louisiana Monroe and seeing a Division I program that didn't have all of the resources and making things work with what you have," Walters explained. "And then getting to go to Alabama for two years and working there and seeing a place that has the resources. You get a bunch of different perspectives as what to use, how to use it, the mind set on the field of different caliber athletes on the field. So, I feel like I bring in a lot of perspective as well as work ethic. Whatever they ask me to do, I'm going to grind and try to do it the best I can."
Walters earned his bachelor's degree in business, with a concentration in marketing, from ULM in July of 2016. In May of 2018, he added a master's in sports business management from the University of Alabama to his resume.

Georgia College Director of Athletics Wendell Staton announced the appointment of Kane Keith to Interim Head Coach for Bobcat Baseball June 1.
The change comes after the departure of head coach Jason Eller after four years at the helm.
I am very appreciative and excited that Kane Keith has accepted the role of Interim Head Baseball Coach at Georgia College, Staton said. Kane is an extremely positive and authentic leader with outstanding character and integrity beyond reproach. His positive and caring attitude has earned him the utmost respect from our entire staff and student-athletes and his leadership will continue the focus on our outstanding student-athlete experience. Kane has been critical to the holistic success within our baseball program and our department. I am very pleased that he has moved into this role want to thank him for his leadership moving forward.
Keith has spent three seasons on the coaching staff for GC Baseball, primarily working with the pitchers.
"I would like to thank Wendell, [Vice President for Student Affairs] Dr. Shawn Brooks, and [University President] Dr. Steve Dorman for this opportunity to serve in such a significant role as Interim Head Coach for our Baseball program that represents this Athletic Department and University, Keith said. It is an honor to use this platform to demonstrate the passion I have for positively impacting our student-athletes with a holistic experience during their time here at Georgia College.
I greatly appreciate the support from all of our administrators and staff, my family, and friends. I could not be more excited to continue the great leadership that our student-athletes have previously been under at Georgia College. I am grateful to Coach Eller for all that he taught me both as a player and Coach. I look forward to overseeing our program at a high level academically and athletically."
Keith made an impact with the pitching staff, as 2020 was shaping up to be one of the top seasons on the mound in Bobcat history. GC went 13-2 in the virus-shortened effort, boasting a 3.84 ERA, the best team average since 2007. He was also working closely with the pitchers for the stellar 2018 season for Charlie Hecht, who dealt his way to All-America, Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Pitcher of the Year, and Region Pitcher of the Year honors.
A Bobcat alum as a pitcher himself, Keith was a two-time PBC Scholar-Athlete, going 5-0 with a 4.50 ERA in his senior season. The lefty tossed a seven-inning gem in the 2017 PBC Championship game, a 6-5 win over UNC Pembroke. During Keiths five seasons with the Bobcat Baseball program, GC won the PBC Regular-Season title once, and the PBC Tournament two times.
GC Baseball is a bit of a family affair for Keith, as his brother Perry was also a reliever for three seasons for the Bobcats.

Tristan Toorie was named assistant baseball coach for the Erskine College baseball program in July of 2018.
Last season Toorie served as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Alcorn State. In his year at Alcorn, the Braves improved in every offensive statistical category and made it to the third round of the 2018 SWAC Baseball Championship Tournament. Toorie worked with hitters, infielders, and the defense. The Braves had one All-Conference nod and a pair of Player of the Week recipients.
Prior to Alcorn State, Toorie served as the defensive coordinator and coached the outfielders and hitters at Eastern Kentucky University. He also assisted with the team's recruiting efforts.
Through six years, Toorie coached 30 student-athletes that went on to continue their career in professional baseball, to include one major-leaguer.
In his first season at EKU, Toorie's efforts helped the program accomplish two things that had never been done before in program history. For the first time, EKU swept three-game series against non-conference opponents on back-to-back weekends. EKU also won three non-conference, three-game weekend series for the first time in program history.
The Colonel defense helped the team allow the fewest stolen bases in the Ohio Valley Conference.
His work with the outfielders was highlighted by freshman Nick Howie starting all 56 games, batting .290, hitting eight home runs, driving in 41 runners and scoring 46 times and was named to the OVC All-Freshman Team. Fellow outfielder Daniel McFarland tied for the team lead with a .363 average. Both committed just four errors all season.
As a team, EKU ranked among the top-50 in the nation in 2017 in home runs per game (17th), home runs (23rd), slugging percentage (29th), scoring (32nd), batting average (38th), doubles per game (44th), runs (47th) and hits (48th), and slugged 82 home runs as a team.
As an assistant academic liaison and community service coordinator, the Colonels locked down two major program awards. EKU became 1 of 36 Division I institutions to receive the 2016-2017 ABCA American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award. The Colonels had a 3.17 team GPA. As strong members in the community, the EKU baseball team were recipients of the national Presidential Community Service Award amassing over 600 hours of community service.
Prior to EKU, Toorie worked at Presbyterian College where he coached the hitters and catchers, oversaw base running and coached first base. During his time at PC, Toorie helped turn a team that batted .246 with 11 home runs in 2014 into a team that hit .290 with 25 home runs in 2015. He also helped the team set a new program record with 27 wins. Toorie tutored PC's first, first team all-conference catcher in school history.
Under Toorie's guidance, Weston Jackson earned All-America honors and finished second in the nation in doubles. It was one of three All-Americans that Toorie has developed in his career. He's also coached six All-Conference honorees, one Dick Howser Trophy Award semifinalist, one USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List candidate, two National Player of the Week award recipients and National Academic Player of the Year, Ben Fisher.

The most unique thing that makes EXACT different from other camps is how they teach the athletes how to talk to coaches and hold a conversation with a college coach. The camps offer a great opportunity to gain exposure that they wouldn't get otherwise. Not only do they allow players to showcase themselves in front of college coaches, they will also receive an evaluation on how they performed throughout the day.
Coach
This camp was unique in that it embraced a competitive atmosphere for the majority of the time the kids were out on the field. It enabled the coaches to see not only a players skills on the diamond, but their competitive make up as well. This aspect of the EXACT Baseball Camp keeps the day up tempo and fun for everyone involved.
Parent
My son attending your camp over the weekend and I must tell you that it was an amazing experience for both of us. I was very impressed with the one on one contact with the coaches representing California. This camp has opened my son's eyes to all the talented ball players that are competing for baseball positions within the organizations. He was given guidance to improve his performance on the field as well as in the classroom. I am so glad we were able to take part in this camp, again it was an amazing experience. Also, the attention given to the parents on understanding the process and knowing what to expect was an eye opener to us. I truly look forward to the next one and cannot wait to see how my son has improved on the field. He is also working on improving his GPA, like you mentioned it about their transcripts not how fast they can throw. Thank you for the wonderful insight and we look forward to future camps with ExactSports.
